Guide to install NTP for Unix/Linux
  • gzip -d ntp-4.1.72.tar.gz
  • tar -xvf ntp-4.1.72.tar
  • cd ntp-4.1.72
  • ./configure
  • make
  • make check
  • make install

Guide to configure NTP for Unix/Linux

  • Creat an empty file: /etc/ntp.drift
  • Creat /etc/ntp.conf as below:
    server server1 #get time from upper level server
    server server2 #at least 3 servers are needed
    #more NTP servers
    fudge 127.127.1.1 stratum 10 refid LCL
    peer server3 key keyid #between the same level servers
    peer server4 key keyid #a key needed between 2 servers
    #more NTP servers
    #some statistics info below
    statistics cryptostats loopstats peerstats
    driftfile /etc/ntp.drift # path for drift file
    statsdir /var/log/ntp/ # path for statistics files
    logfile /var/log/ntp/ntp.log # path for log file
    keys /etc/ntp.keys #path for key file
  • Creat /etc/ntp.keys as below:
    keyid  M xxxxxxxx #M means MD5
  • Run "ntpd", then "ntpq" after minutes,
    and try "as" and "pe" to check the status
    ntpd runs ok if as below:
    ntpq> as
    ind assID status conf reach auth condition last_event cnt
    ==================================
    1    24045 9614  yes   yes   none sys.peer  reachable  1
    2    24046 9414  yes   yes   none candidat  reachable  1
    3    24047 9414  yes   yes   none candidat  reachable  1
    ntpq> pe

  • Better synchronize the local time by:
    "ntpd -q" or "ntpdate some.ntp.server"

About NTP4.1.71 for Microsoft Windows
  • 安装程序
  • 选择单服务器模式
  • 参考NTP服务列表,设置服务器地址
  • ntpd的控制在:
    控制面板->管理工具->组件服务-NetworkTimeProtocol
  • 可以启动ntpd守护进程保持时间同步
  • 或者停止ntpd,执行命令行"ntpdate -b some.ntp.server"
